Chapter 13

The Art Of Getting A Man

Out Of A Chair

At nine o’clock on Wednesday night Abbra went up stairs to change into warmer clothes. Clay was still out on the ranch somewhere and she was worried. He hadn’t even come in for dinner. It had only been two days ago that she had been late coming home and encountered those coyotes and Clay had needed to assemble a search party for her. Tonight it was her turn to return the favor. She only hoped that she could find him and that he wasn’t hurt. With that thought in mind she quickened her steps as she reached the stairs. Rex’s tired voice drifted up the stairs as she descended.

Abbra rounded the corner into the kitchen and found Rex seated at the back of the table looking exhausted and Clay sprawled out in a chair he had pulled away from the table. There was a trail of mud, hopefully, it was mud, from the back door to the boots that were still on both of their feet. He looked up when she walked into the room and then followed her eyes to the muddy trail. He groaned and covered his face with both of his hands.

“My ass is draggin’, I’m sorry . . . Baby.” He sighed and dropped his hands. His muscles being too sore to hold them up any longer.

He let his head fall back when she stalked by him without saying a word. He knew that she was mad. She liked her kitchen clean at all times. He was surprised when he heard the refrigerator open instead of the broom closet and managed to lift his head just in time to see her hand him a longneck and then slide one across the table to Rex.

“I’m not one to usually encourage drinking, but even I can tell that you two could use this at the moment.” She told them as she surveyed the damage the day had done to the two men.

“Thank you, Darlin.” Rex said leaning forward to grab the bottle.

“Two more minutes and you would have missed me.” Clay’s head shot up to look at her with wide eyes.

“Where you goin’?” Fear shot through him. They had not spoken of their kiss or anything else that had taken place between them the other night. He wasn’t sure how he felt about a lot of things about Abbra, but the one thing he was sure about was that he did not want her going anywhere.

“To look for you, Cowboy. It’s after nine o’clock! You should have been in hours ago . . . you even missed dinner. I knew then that something was seriously wrong.” She giggled at the worried look on his face.

Abbra watched his face soften as he reached for her hand. It was a tender gesture and it made her heart thump in her chest.

“I’m sorry.” He sighed making it obvious that he really did feel bad about worrying her. “I should have called you or told you at lunch.
